Do you wear your hat at a special angle when your team needs a goal? Would you willingly sacrifice your last beer for a breakaway? Would you like to always know what direction to face when you pray to the soccer gods for victory? Then this is the application for you.
Wherever you travel in the world, US Soccer Fan will point out the direction of the major league soccer stadium in the U.S. or Canadian city of your choice. By facing the stadium where your favorite team is playing this week, whether home or away, you can have the peace of mind of knowing that your special ritual will have its most positive impact on the outcome of the game.
Operation:
In keeping with the KLR Applications philosophy of deploying the simplest possible user interface, the US Soccer Fan application requires only that you start up the program and select the city. The software does the rest. No configuration required.
If you are using the iPhone 3GS, the arrow will automatically point in the direction of midfield at the stadium in your selected city, regardless of which way you are facing. It will continue to point in the proper direction as you turn. Other devices (the iPod Touch, the original iPhone, and the iPhone 3G) do not have a built-in compass and must be manually pointed toward true north in order for the arrow to point in the correct direction.
Notes:
The iPod Touch is only able to determine direction by wi-fi triangulation. Therefore, the application will generally only work in certain urban areas.
The original iPhone does not have GPS capability. It therefore relies on cell tower triangulation to determine your location. If you do not have a good signal, it may not be able to figure out where you are. The same may be true when using the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS indoors, where GPS signals do not reach.
When using this, or any compass-based application with the iPhone 3GS, it is important to stay away from artificial magnetic fields. These include music speakers, motors, refrigerator magnets, computers, electric and hybrid cars, etc.
