Part 97 Map is an amateur radio app for iPhone and iPod touch. Thanks for taking the time to read what it's all about. To put it briefly, I want give you the opportunity to thoroughly understand the location of geographic boundaries mentioned in the FCC's Part 97 regulations for Amateur Radio (Title 47 CFR Part 97).

At times, Part 97 is clear and specific, but not always. The maps here will help you visualize the range of possible interpretations and evaluate how accurate they are. In particular, knowing how great circle arcs differ from rhumb lines is important in the Seattle area for Line A.

Part 97 Map includes maps of Line A, the National Radio Quiet Zone, a large unnamed region in Colorado and Wyoming, the area surrounding the White Sands Missile Range, the Arecibo Observatory, and numerous FCC monitoring stations, all of which are referred to by Part 97.

To get the maximum benefit from these maps, don't forget to look at the associated detail screens.

Especially with Line A and White Sands, it's better to think in terms of a fuzzy boundary with some thickness to it, as opposed to a sharp dividing line. In the detail screens, I've tried to communicate the scope of different interpretations you might encounter and the reasons behind them.

One thing you won't find on these maps is a little blue dot showing, "you are here", and that's very intentional. My reasoning is that inaccurate GPS fixes, when combined with unfamiliar maps, have a tendency to lead people towards making hasty decisions which get them into trouble. I want you to avoid that trap. My feeling is that these maps need to be carefully considered in order to be fully understood, so I encourage you to zoom in and take your time looking around.

Also, I should point out that I am not a lawyer, and nothing here should be mistaken for legal advice. That said, I've put lots of careful effort into providing accurate information, so I hope and expect that you will find these maps illuminating and useful.

Sincerely,
Will Snook
