Instantly familiar to eye care professionals measuring near vision this App is a close as technically possible to traditional printed cards which become bacterially contaminated and visibly soiled with use.

The small fonts used are as good as print when used with a retina display.

Most vision acuity charts require the patient identify single letters in a line. Continuous text charts are designed to simulate everyday near vision tasks for patients, such as reading the newspaper, by using actual sentences. These sentences are calibrated to have a specific number of letters and spaces to create an equal test and consist of precisely scaled fonts according to three international scale formats J (US), N (British) and M unit. By testing with continuous text, optometrists can establish a basis for prescriptions for near corrective lenses. The near vision scales are medically approved to ensure consistency when referring patients between eye care professionals and provide the standardisation necessary to monitor the near vision of patients with sight threatening conditions.

Traditionally continuous text charts consist of black Times Roman font printed on white card held at 40cm or 16 inches by the patient. The cards are subject to discolouration and bacterial contamination with usage and have to be replaced.

Just Reading Test Types leverages the new iPad's improved resolution to display small fonts accurately. A user setting allows near visual acuity to be measured using one of three default formats. Additionally there are new tests that simulate everyday tasks and activities that patients may encounter, such as reading a map, viewing a watch face or mobile phone text, labelling or playing piano music.

Just Reading Test Types will be instantly recognisable to ophthalmologists, optometrists, medical practitioners and anyone routinely measuring human vision. Whilst providing innovation, the standards have been faithfully been ported to iPad to allow backward comparisons and continuing care.
