平山氏の撮影は
1980年代後半の旧東欧を中心とした
ヨーロッパから始まった。
ドイツではベルリンの壁をハンマーでたたいた。

1993年からは南米ボリビアをベースに
中南米の撮影に時間をかけるように。
ボリビアに永住する気持ちで住みはじめたが、
1997年のペルー・リマでおきた日-
本大使公邸人質事件を撮影したことによって
プロの写真家として「平山和充」の人生が大きく変わっていく。

2000年以降は東京をベースに、
ユネスコの世界遺産、
世界の自然・都市・遺跡・子どもたち、
国内の温泉や旅館などの撮影を行っている。
近年、
アジアの撮影も随分多くなり、
世界遺産については北中南米、
アジア、ヨーロッパ、オセアニア、北アフリカ、
日本と、50ヶ国、190ヶ所を取材。

大自然とのふれあいは一番楽しく、
撮影は光と陰にこだわり、
朝日や夕陽の撮影にも随分時間をかけているのが
平山のスタイルである。

山岳写真は5000m級の山へ
たったひとりで撮影に行く。
エベレストの撮影でもたったひとりで
30キロの荷物を担ぎ、
10日間かけて、5600mのカラパタールまで
何回か撮影に行っている。

撮影後は、写真だけでなく、
撮影体験談として紀行文やルポ・エッセイ、
テレビ、ラジオ出演、講演会などで発表し
精力的に活動している。
