Application Description
Wiki Offline lets you access the top thousand pages on Wikipedia, with full pictures, graphics, and convenient layout -- all without a network connection.
It's perfect for airplanes, iPod Touch users away from WiFi, and people concerned about battery life.
Using about 1% of the memory of your device, you can have at your fingertips the most significant parts of the world's most comprehensive encyclopedia, with full color graphics, diagrams, and even some video. The content is drawn from about a thousand of the Wikipedia pages that were most frequently accessed over the last year.
Knowing what pages have been popular over the last year is also a good way to stay current on topics that people care about.
Of course, it's not a complete substitute for a network connection, but it will ensure you always have something to read and learn about.
The app lets you search page titles and browse approximately a thousand of the English Wikipedia's top pages. The files have all been processed and edited so that images and hyperlinks are loaded offline, from your device rather than from the internet. Other formatting anomalies have been corrected, making it convenient and fun to browse from your phone.
We're aiming for the right balance between convenience and completeness. The download is small enough that it shouldn't take too long on most home internet connections. The current plan is to update the app's content every few months to ensure that it stays current. We're open to suggestions about whether to make more or less frequent updates, include more content, filter some of it out, and so on.
We're very responsive, and our apps are written cleanly and with the right set of features. For example, this app implements some features called for in reviews of the 2008 application that stored a 2 GB text-only copy of Wikipedia on your phone. We're happy to add other features that our users find useful. Right now, the user interface is meant to be clean and straightforward.
