Application Description
INNOVATION
==========
Yachts are often equipped with numerous measuring devices, but none of them is able to give accurate information about the wave height. WaveHeight has been designed to optimize processing power and instrumentation contained in the iPhone / iPod to bring you a pioneering application.
PRINCIPLE
=========
WaveHeight uses the accelerometer of the iPhone / iPod to measure the height of the waves you encounter during your sea navigations.
The reconstruction of the variations of height from the variations of acceleration is performed through a powerful algorithm which is based on 30 seconds recordings.
UTILIZATION
===========
To use WaveHeight is very easy : as soon as you press the 'Start' button, WaveHeight initializes, then starts a 30 seconds recording. At the end the recording, data are processed, and WaveHeight displays the curve of the vertical position variations, the value of the highest wave detected during the recording, the average period of the waves, as well as the state of the sea corresponding to the height.
If you press the 'Stop' button, the current recording is canceled. When you re-press 'Start', a new sequence is initialized.
You can also, by shaking your device, cancel the current recording, and restart a new sequence 'initialization-recording'.
ARCHIVES
========
The measures are archived. Archives are displayed as histograms. Each histogram is associated to a specific day and displays, for each hour of the day, the average height (blue bar) and the maximum height. The day to be visualized is selected by using a spinning-wheel. WaveHeight can store data for 30 days max (only days during which at least one measurement was made are stored). Beyond 30 days, the most recent recording will replace the oldest one.
WARNINGS
========
The algorithm is specifically dedicated to the analysis of waves and shall not be used to measure any other movement.
In some cases, data of a recording may be not usable. This can occur for example when the device is exposed to shocks or vibrations. In such a case, WaveHeight displays the message " NO DATA VALID " and starts a new sequence. In some other cases, however, WaveHeight may complete the analysis, but the results can be corrupted. For that reason, WaveHeight must be used for sea entertaining purpose only and by no means for safety or scientific purpose.
In any case, Logalp shall not be held liable for any kind of use of collected data, nor for any claim regarding the accuracy.
