The watched kettle may in fact boil…but the real question is…how much is it costing me?!!

A few months ago I was chatting with my friend about energy costs. Australia is getting so expensive. The electricity bills just keep getting bigger.

So anyway, I was making a cup of tea, and our attention turned to the kettle. I fill it up in my usual fashion.

“You know you’re wasting money boiling a full kettle of water? Our two cups need only need one third of a kettle of water” he said. Huh? Really? I don’t even think about it…I just do it on autopilot.

So I started thinking about it…he’s right of course, I was flushing money down the toilet. How much though? Then it hit me, I think I should build an app to answer that question! And so the watched kettle was born.



The watched kettle is essentially a real time visual approximation of what your appliance or multiple appliances together are costing to run. Some other apps will calculate a cost based on a time input. But this is real time, it’s far more powerful – you can feel the electricity and hence money, being consumed.



Here’s how it works:

Select an appliance or appliances to monitor.

Fine tune your local settings, if you want.

Tap ‘start’! And watch the cost rack up.

Tap ‘stop’ when your done, or leave the counter running in the background and come back and check up on it later.

To reset the counter back to zero, just tap ‘reset’
