When Allan Savory introduced the ideas of Holistic Management upon the cattle ranching community, several mthods for collecting data were formulated. TransectPinDrop is the second in the suite of apps built around the teachings of Allan Savory and the concepts of Holistic Management as applied to cattle ranching. Along the established transects for monitoring a 200ft tape is laid and every 2 ft along that tape a pin is dropped and the observer then records what the pin hits. The second observation is the distance from the pin strike to the nearest live plant and the species of that plant, in the case of a pin strike upon a live plant, then obviously the distance is zero. The tape distances are presented in a table in either ascending or descending order and the detail page includes entry fields for what was hit, the distance to the nearest live plant and the species of that plant. The strikes results are summed and totals recorded. The data is stored as a csv (Comma Separated Value) file and may be uploaded to Apple iWorks Numbers or Microsoft Excel using the File Sharing mode of iTunes.
