Vlad, Prince of Wallachia (1431–1476), more commonly known as Vlad the Impaler or simply as Dracula, was a three-time Voivode (a word of Slavic origin, used in Romania for the leader of a principality, a war-lord, or a supreme chief) of Wallachia, ruling mainly from 1456 to 1462. Vlad III is historically known for his resistance against the Ottoman Empire. In several documents, Vlad is referred to as Draculea, which means "son of the dragon", in reference to his father, Vlad Dracul, who received that nickname from his subjects, following his admission into the Order of the Dragon. In Romanian, Dracul means the Devil. The Bible calls the devil by the name of dragon, great dragon and the snake.
