The Augmented Reality App from Swissgrid addresses the debate on overhead lines versus underground cabling in the transmission grid. The two technologies are presented as three-dimensional animations in a virtual landscape to show their respective impacts on the environment.  
Explanation of the virtual landscape:
Several years ago a 220-kilovolt extra high voltage line was built to transport electricity from the storage power plant that lies at a higher altitude. Because turbine technology has improved considerably since then, more energy could be produced. But the power plant is unable to produce electricity at full turbine capacity because the existing line is too weak to incorporate the electricity into the grid and transport it.
For this reason, Swissgrid is planning to replace the existing 220-kilovolt line with a more efficient 380-kilovolt line. Swissgrid is investigating the use of both overhead lines and underground cabling.
