Suntory Museum of Art opened its doors in 1961, and this year celebrates its 50th
anniversary. Since its founding, the Museum has had "Art in Life" as its guiding concept,
building a diverse collection of paintings, lacquerware, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and
glassware and holding a wide variety of exhibitions. In March 2007, the Museum moved to
the Tokyo Midtown complex in Roppongi. Under the new banner of "Art revisited, beauty
revealed," the Museum continues to be an active venue for encounters between various
types of art and between art and people.

Taking a hint from the Museum's motto of "Art revisited, beauty revealed," this application
aims to make art and other items in the Museum's collection more familiar and accessible
to the general public. It contains images and commentary for 50 masterpieces of various
types, including paintings, lacquerware, ceramics, glassware, textiles, and accessories,
selected from among the Museum's collection of approximately 3,000 items. Designed to
allow people to experience Japanese art, the application not only allows you to view items,
but also includes a fun feature that leverages the iPhone's unique capabilities. Just by
moving your hand close to the screen, the display morphs, wrapping and opening items
with a variety of animations that borrow their motifs from items in the Museum.
