○○ ‘Un suceso en el puente de Owl Creek’ by Ambrose Bierce ○○

The writer Julio Cortazar included this disturbing story in his selection of ‘Unforgettable Stories’, together with others by Borges, Truman Capote, Poe or Tolstoi. The text sets off as Peyton Farquar, a Southern landowner supporter of the Confederate cause is going to be hung by soldiers of the Northern Federal Army during the American Civil War. The narrator skillfully takes the reader into the condemned man’s mind in order to describe a delirious escape, his riveting struggle with death and his reunion with life and renewed awareness of every colour, sound and detail. However, what makes ‘An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge’ so famous is its surprising and unforgettable end, which calls for a second reading.

The story was first published in 1890 in a newspaper, the San Francisco Examiner. One year later it was published together with others by the same author in a compilation titled ‘Tales of Soldiers and Civilians’.

‘An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge’, by North American writer Ambrose Bierce is the first issue in eBBi Book’s ‘Classics’ collection, which features great stories in the history of literature and less well-known stories by renowned authors. Our bilingual format, which enables instant translation, and the perfect and guided synchronisation with the audio track allow us to include in our offer texts such as these, which we consider essential despite their complexity.

Ambrose Gwinnet Bierce

The facts about Ambrose Bierce’s birth are perfectly well known; he was born in a hut on Horse Cave Creek, in Meigs County, Ohio, USA, on June 24th 1842. However, the circumstances surrounding his death are not at all clear. In October 1913, when he was already a renowned writer, he left Washington, crossed Mexico and joined Pancho Villa’s army. His disappearance in Chihuahua, leaving no trace, is one of the most famous in the history of literature. The writer Carlos Fuentes wrote a novel about Bierce’s last years, titled “Gringo Viejo” (Old Gringo), which was later made into a film.

Although he is not as well known nowadays, Ambrose Bierce, who was a journalist, editorialist and writer, is considered to be the literary successor of Allan Poe and Melville, and many critics consider him to be in the same league as Lovecraft and Maupassant. He was a first rate story-teller who wrote some of the best macabre stories, such as ‘The Death of Halpin Frayser’, ‘The Damned Thing’ or ‘An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge’.
