I like an element of chance thrown into my strategy games. so I basically took ideas from checkers, chess, go - and then added elements from something somewhere between Diplomacy and Risk.
I also like fast moving phone games - a typical 1-player game of strataGems will probably be less than 4 minutes long.
Simple rules - but nuances in the way that you can make probability swing in your favor makes it pretty much impossible to completely master.
