Welcome to the OFFICIAL Stran Smith iPhone application!
In April of 2003, Stran Smith was told that he would never be able to rope again. Doesn’t seem like a big deal unless roping is how you make a living and support a family. In the midst of an outstanding season, this professional athlete suffered a stroke. And having had one stroke, Stran almost certainly would have another unless he took a very strong blood thinner that would not allow him to ever rope again or even lead a normal active lifestyle.
Doctors determined the cause of the stroke to be a congenital heart defect. In May 2003, doctors in Boston inserted an Amplatzer, a nickel and titanium device that, once inserted, opened like a tiny umbrella into the hole in his heart. Just six weeks later Stran was competing professionally once again.
