Recalling an answer over expanding intervals of time (1 minute, 2 minutes, 4 minutes, 8 minutes...) helps to cement the information in memory, even for those with impaired memory. Combining the recall with a physical act (e.g. turning over a card) involves procedural memory, a memory system often preserved when explicit memory is impaired.
