The idea for Snap Angel was born after seeing the tragic stories of Maura Murray and Brooke Wilberger on an ABC News 20/20 episode in 2008.

Maura Murray was a 21-year old nursing student who disappeared in 2004 after getting stranded on the side of a road in New Hampshire and after refusing to get in a bus that had stopped by to help. Brooke Wilberger was a 19-year old college student who was abducted in Corvallis, Oregon while on vacation. The idea for Snap angel was further cemented after watching the story of Natalee Holloway, the teenager who left a restaurant in Aruba with three strange men in 2005 while on a graduation trip.

In each case, I wondered whether an application such as Snap Angel would have helped them. Would Maura have felt more comfortable getting in the bus if she could have sent a picture of the license plate to Snap Angel? Would Joran van der Sloot have hurt Natalee if she had taken his picture before leaving with him and his friends and sending it to the cloud?

After years of thinking that I couldn't help these tragic victims, and then more recently after seeing yet another story of a woman that left a local casino with a stranger never to be seen again, the time for inaction was over. Snap Angel could have helped these women. It could have taken pictures of their kidnappers. It could have recorded license plates. The police would have had an easy way to track down what happened to them. And there is no way I could sit still and not do something to help prevent this from happening again. Cloud-based safety can work! Snap Angel won't save everyone. But if it saves one person from suffering a tragedy, then I think it's worth it.
