Lebanon is a meltingpot of many cultures full of antagonisms. In the capital Beirut
alone, about two million people belonging to more than 18 religious groups share an
area of 100 square kilometers. It is mainly the young who have to take the challenge
of creating and shaping Beirut as well as their personal future against the background
of the fragile peace. For example, round 43% (Germany: 25%) of the enhabitants are
younger than 25 years, they represent a main part of the population in Lebanon. What
visions, ideals and role models do these young people have nowadays?
Sabine Stein’s work “Silent spaces” shows a new photographic approach to the city
of Beirut, its stories and its future perspectives. The pictures of Lebanon in our mind
are coined by war or violence. Sabine Stein, however, looked for everyday situations
and scenes to break through these stigmatas. The main aspect of the work is a slow
visual process of approaching the city: the observer is given the possibility to participate
in the dialogue in which the photographer entered with the people and objects
and to get to know a new face of Beirut.

Der Libanon ist ein Schmelztiegel verschiedener Kulturen voller Gegensätze: Alleine in der
Hauptstadt Beirut leben auf insgesamt 100 Quadratkilometern ca. zwei Millionen Menschen
(Berlin: ca. 0,38 Mio.) mit offiziell 18 verschiedenen Religionen. Vor allem die jungen Menschen
stehen vor der Aufgabe, Beirut, aber auch ihre persönliche Zukunft vor dem Hintergrund der
brüchigen Friedenssituation zu gestalten. Rund 43% (Deutschland 25%) der Menschen im Libanon
sind unter 25 Jahre alt, und repräsentieren damit einen bedeutenden Teil der Bevölkerung.
Welche Visionen, Ideale und Vorbilder haben diese jungen Menschen heute?
Die Arbeit “Silent spaces” von Sabine Stein zeigt eine neue fotografische Herangehensweise an
die Stadt Beirut, ihre Geschichten und ihre Zukunftsperspektiven. Die Bilder, die wir vom Libanon
im Kopf haben sind geprägt von Krieg oder Gewalt. In ihren Fotografien macht sich Sabine
Stein auf die Suche nach alltäglichen Situationen und Motiven, um dieses Stigmata zu brechen.
Bei der Arbeit steht ein langsames Erfahren auf visueller Ebene im Vordergrund: so haben Sie
als Betrachter die Möglichkeit an dem Dialog, in den die Fotografin mit den Menschen und Objekten
