Note :
Many users would be surprised with the romanization system.
The pinyin used is closed to the Fawu romanization system known as the latin system.
It is neither IPA or Hanyu Pinyin.
- Many users cannot display the IPA symbols correctly.
- IPA is itself unfamiliar to many users (beside US citizens).
- Transcriptions using IPA are difficult to remember.
- Hanyu Pinyin is perfectly suited for Mandarin.
- Mandarin does not have voiced consonants but Shanghainese has 7 voiced consonants (b, d, g, v, z, zhi /Z/, gi /dZ/) that are found in English and French.

For those reasons and others that are technical, two methods seems appropriate, the Chicago one known as the Lumazi and the French one.

That's why there is not so many numerical dictionary for shanghainese, it has to be handmade.
