Some would say that the Great Falls area on the Potomac River near Washington, DC offers some of the best whitewater kayaking to be found anywhere in the United States, and it's certainly one of the most convenient and scenic paddling spots within minutes from a major urban center. If you frequent the Great Falls area for paddling, then you know that one of the most critical pieces of information for planning a safe and fun session on the water is the current river level.

The Potomac River Level app was put together to essentially do one simple thing: report the current river level near Great Falls. The app also provides some current weather info and a news feed of some local paddling news, but for the most part it was made to make getting the current river level on your iPhone convenient, simple, and easy.

APP REQUIREMENTS

The river level function draws from the Internet, so a working Internet connection is necessary to view the river level and other information that the app provides. If you're having trouble getting the river level to display, check your connection first.

The app was tested using iOS 4.0 and up on an iPhone 4. For best results, please make sure your software is updated to the current version.

SUPPORT AND FEEDBACK

If you're having trouble with the app, please send a note to support@metadasein.com and I'll help you get it sorted out. If you find the app useful (and I hope you do), feel free to leave a comment below.

UPDATES

At the time of this writing (Version 1.0) this app is pretty simple. There are, however, a few features that I'd like to include in future versions. First among these would be to have the app update the river level automatically when it opens. And it would be good to get some more spots on here. If you'd like to see these things or if you have any other feature requests, send a note (address above). If there's a good reception and the app gets some good use, then hopefully there will be some draw to make it better—both in the short run and over time.

APP SPONSOR

The app and the data feed for the river level report is provided by Potomac Paddlesports. Based just 15 miles outside of Washington DC, Potomac Paddlesports is the region's premier paddling school and gear shop for beginners and experts alike, and the first professional kayak school to have its entire program fully sanctioned by the American Canoe Association. The company prides itself on five core things: quality instruction from the area's best instructors, convenience, free use of top-quality equipment for students, community, and environmental stewardship.
