Peril is your replacement for this process. It's an elegant yet powerful distress notification tool, which eliminates the need to notify people ahead of time of your intentions. Only if you do NOT return to the app to cancel your timer will it notify your contacts that you need help.

How does it work?

Specify one or more contacts, then set your timer. If you don't cancel the timer before it expires, an email is sent to your contacts with your distress message and last known coordinates. If you cancel the timer, nothing is sent to anyone.

Peril is cloud-based, which means that even if your phone is lost, stolen, confiscated or destroyed after you've set your timer, your designated contacts will still be notified. (While Peril requires Internet access, after starting your timer you're free to travel as far from civilization as you like, secure in the knowledge that your message will still be sent unless you reconnect and cancel the timer.)

Set your timer for up to 12 hours and designate up to three emergency contacts. Your custom distress message is optional; without it Peril will still send a default notification that includes your last known coordinates and IP address.

No time-of-day or time zone complications, either. Peril simply counts the hours and minutes elapsed since you started your timer, independent of time zones, Daylight Saving Time, leap years, etc. Set it for 6 hours and 25 minutes, and it will count precisely 6 hours and 25 minutes, regardless of the current time of day or how many time zones you cross.

Since none of its settings are stored on your phone (including your email address, passcode and contacts), Peril is well suited for secure professional use, including journalism, law enforcement and military.

Peril uses no chimes, beeps or alerts that could disclose its use or compromise a sensitive situation. You could even set your timer then delete the app from your phone, and your messages will still be sent.
