Pepita lives in a city with no name and no direct references, but it has the characteristics of every western city, with all its conveniences, stress, and forms of violence. The spectator sees the world through Pepita’s eyes and he has to help her. At the very beginning, everything is strictly black and white and, step by step, Pepita reacts to it, changing what she sees. She reacts emotionally to her surroundings, colouring moments and details of new worlds places such as her office, her physical figure, her family, her relationships.

Pepita: The Main Character

Pepita is a mix between a woman and a child, constantly hesitating between reality and the unconscious. Pepita’s special attention is given to the characters with which she surrounds herself, in particular her extremely cultured dog Cyclop and her friend Iaiuk. Pepita is repressed by her projections of herself, but, at the same time, is so strong that she manages to overturn them for a few seconds, as if by magic. Pepita’s crazy charm and the sympathy she evokes in her readers lies in this quirky interplay.

Pepita has a small eye (a dot), which is the more rational eye, and a big one (a ring), that represents the unconscious that transfigures reality and allows her to see things that are only in her mind. Her way of perceiving the world – and of trying to live it – consists in the continuous interaction between her two eyes.

Pepita is continually shifting between being a woman and a child, with results that are not always harmonious. You might describe her as an anti-Barbie.
She is a being who is full of life, but who’s self emerges in her conflict with life.
Pepita’s interest in freedom (and its numerous contradictions) is one of her defining characteristics.
The future is conceived as vague, whereas the present is continually and vividly alive.

Cyclop - Bonus

Cyclop is Pepita’s dog and has one single eye in the middle of his forehead.That’s why he is called Cyclop. He is very amusing. He explains to Pepita how the world works. He is a universal encyclopaedia-computer, giving her the meaning of the most obscure words. Cyclop is also a living “gps”: he helps Pepita find her way home when she gets lost (always) in the tentacular metropolis. Cyclop really loves Pepita and shows it both in a kidding and scolding her, always helping her.

Iaiuk - Bonus

Iaiuk is the Pepita’s childhood friend, a well brought-up city girl who also likes the country very much. She is sure of everything, determined, with good common sense and not much inclined to indulge the existential anguish and suffering typical of adolescents. She is very active and quick, always ready to help Pepita with her ever-present archery bow. Iaiuk is a powerful girl with an incredible capacity to transform real bad luck into the most precious of virtues.
