“This app is powered by Social Media Beez”- The Penang Free WiFi project was launched in 2009 as part of the Penang State Government’s groundbreaking Wireless@Penang initiative. This project aims to provide convenient broadband access to Penang residents and visitors via hundreds of wireless hotpots across the island and Butterworth.
The Penang Free WiFi project is the first and only initiative of its kind in the country where free wireless Internet is widely available to everyone in public areas such as recreational hubs and commercial centres. More than 1550 hotspots have been successfully deployed across 13 Parliamentary and 40 State constituencies in Penang. Although deploying such a large-scale statewide WiFi network presents its challenges, the focus has always been on delivering a superior quality user experience.
Besides providing the people of Penang with easy access to information via the Internet, the project also seeks to foster economic development and reinforce Penang as a destination of choice for tourists and the international business community.
