Application Description
The Nixie tube, an alchemy of glass and metal forged into an intricate and beautiful creation that is brought to life by the flow of electricity. The first truly electronic digital display device has found a new home on the latest display technology.
If you are looking for a clock with a long list of features and gimmicks this is probably not the app for you. If you are looking for a beautifully rendered Nixie clock, designed to pay homage to this wonderful piece of technological history, you have come to the right place. In fact it hardly matters that the chosen device is a clock, it could just as well have been a calculator or thermometer. What does matter is the tubes; it's all about the tubes.
No computer generation here. The Nixie tube sampled for this clock is a Russian IN-14, produced in 1973. The IN-14 is peculiar in that the same stencil was used for the two and five numerals. The reason for this is unknown. The high resolution imagery clearly shows the mesh anode, metallic stencils (cathodes) and the violet haze that surrounds the glowing numerals.
The tubes have been photographed in two carefully chosen lighting conditions. The first was chosen as the best to reveal intricate internal detail of the tubes, the second to show off the beautiful neon glow with minimal distraction.
