Neighborhood Score is an application designed to provide a
health and sustainability score for a street address in a neighborhood. The
application is based on a holistic model of health which can identify
assets and hazards in the physical and social environments of urban areas
and in so doing, can be used to assess livability, inform market based
decisions and advocate for healthy living environments and the reduction of
inequities. Neighborhood Score is based on substantial health research
documenting how neighborhood conditions have major health effects. This
application is a new innovation way of visualizing information in an effort
to achieve higher quality social and physical environmental that advances
health. The data informing Neighborhood Score was derived from public data
made available by the San Francisco Department of Public Health on an open
data government portal.

Specific measures of a healthy neighborhood were derived from the
Sustainable Communities Index, a system of indicators for livable,
equitable and prosperous cities. Twenty Sustainable Communities Index
indicators, encompassing measures of environment, transportation,
community, public realm, education, housing and economy, were analyzed at
quarter mile grid squares for the whole city. Each grid was assigned a
score based on the relative distribution of each indicator within the city.
The scores of each indicator were used to create a cumulative index,
referred to as the Neighborhood Score for each quarter mile grid square.
