NCAPcal: NCAP calculator for frontal US NCAP star calculation

NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) is an automotive safety test program conducted by US government to provide general public about the safety performance of new cars. Current tests require vehicle impacting into a rigid barrier in a speed of 35 MPH. The kinetic energy of this event equals to falling from a 12.5 meter height (40.9 feet, about height of a four-story building) to a concrete floor. With modern automotive structure design and advanced restraint system (seat belts and airbags), the occupants can survive by a large chance. NCAP 5 star means less than 10% of possibility to sustain AIS 3+ injuries (serious injuries), NCAP 4 star means between 10% to 15% of serious injury risk, NCAP 3 star means between 15% to 20% serious injury risk, NCAP 2 star means between 20% to 40% of risk, and above 40% risk is rated as 1 star. NCAP tests use Hybrid III family impact dummies (50th male percentile in driver seat and 5th female in passenger seat) to assess the injury outcome of the impact, and parameters from four critical regions (head, neck, chest and femur) are used to predict injury risk. NCAPcal provide user a way to understand how risks are estimated and influence of body regional injuries to overall injury risk and NCAP star rating.

This app intents to provide a quick way to estimate the NCAP star value with minimum user input for the current US NCAP frontal 35MPH barrier test.

Only four critical values: HIC, Nij, Chest deflection and Max femur force are needed for user input using 4 sliders. The less critical values (neck Fz+, and neck Fz-) are not required for input since these two parameters don’t significantly impact the neck injury risk, which is dominated by Nij value. To reduce efforts of user inputs, only the maximum value of femur force from either left femur or right femur is required. The NCAP tests database from NHTSA’s website were analyzed to determine the range of these sliders: the middle position of slider is about the average value of all independent tests, and the range of slider is 3-fold of standard deviation. The star score is reported in a continuous way with float numbers instead of discrete integer numbers.
