µXgam estimates the linear attenuation coefficient (µ) given in 1/mm, and the mass attenuation coefficient (µ /ρ) given in cm²/g for X and gamma rays. The cross section (σ) used for the estimation of µ is computed using the Standard or the Livermore model.

Total cross section include scattering (coherent and incoherent for Livermore model, and only incoherent for Standard model), as well as photoelectric absorption for any element (Z ≤ 100). The range of energies depends on the chosen model.

Standard: 100 eV - 100 TeV
Livermore:250 eV - 1 GeV

Furthermore, specifying the thickness of the element, µXgam estimates the photon attenuation. The atomic mass and element density are displayed to the user as well.

The algorithms used for the estimation of the cross section are based on the Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation software. They have been extracted and adapted to be used on iOS devices, resulting in this handy reference app.

The validation of the algorithms used by this app has been done by comparing cross sections values against Geant4 values. This was part of the scientific work presented at the Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference in October 2011.

"H. Perez-Ponce et al., Implementing Geant4 on GPU for medical applications. XI Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference (MIC 2011), October 2011, Valence, Spain."
