The Setting: Centuries in our future, humanity has spread across the galaxy, inhabiting countless terraformed worlds. For 150 years two mighty space powers, the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance (FPA), have fought each other. A third power, the planet-state of Phezzan, trades with both sides but maintains close ties with the Empire.

Reinhard von Lohengramm, a rising star in the Empire’s military, is determined to free his sister, Annerose von Grünewald, from bondage as the Emperor’s mistress. His close friend since boyhood, Siegfried Kircheis, has sworn to help him.

Matching wits in battle with Reinhard is the FPA’s Yang Wen-Li, an aspiring academic who joined the military to earn money to support his studies. He has none of Reinhard’s ambition, but his brilliance forces him to play a central role in the conflict with the Empire.
