You need to size a solar thermal or photovoltaic system? iSolBuddy is the application you need! iSolBuddy provides the total irradiation available every month of the year, on a solar panel, wherever you are in Europe. For this, it relies on satel-light, the European database of solar radiation (www.satel-light.com).

iSolBuddy needs the geographic location of the panel, its orientation and its tilt from the horizontal. To define them, two modes are available: “Auto” and “Manual”.

The simplest mode is “Auto”, the default mode. You just need to position the iPhone in the same plane as the solar panel, and then touch “Compute”. iSolBuddy uses the GPS, the magnetometers and the accelerometers from the iPhone to characterize the orientation and the tilt of the panel, as well as the geographic coordinates of your actual location. This information is sent to the satel-light server which returns the amount of solar irradiation available every month.

To use iSolBuddy in “Manual” mode, touch the “Auto” button in the upper right of the screen. You can then enter yourself: the latitude, the longitude, or the tilt and the orientation of the panel. This is the mode to use if you realize that the magnetometer of the iPhone is influenced by an additional magnetic field.

On the first screen “Measure”, iSolBuddy provide the annual solar irradiation. One touch on the “Details” icon gives you access to a second screen showing monthly values of the solar irradiation. One additional touch on the “Save” button will save the graph in the iPhone photo album for later use in a report.

There is an “iSolBuddy” menu in the “Settings” application on the iPhone. This menu allows you to change the size of the font and the unit used for irradiation.

iSolBuddy uses solar irradiation statistics coming from the satel-light database (www.satel-light.com). This database has been derived from the processing METEOSAT satellite images. It covers Europe with a spatial resolution of 5 km and a temporal resolution of 30 mn. You will find on the satel-light server, the exact geographic coverage of the database. The statistics are based on 5 years: 1996-2000.

iSolBuddy is the result of a partnership between the research laboratory LASH at ENTPE (www.entpe.fr/lash) and the kiloWattSol company (www.kilowattsol.com). Version 1.0 of iSolBuddy has been developed by Raphael Pinto (http://raphpinto.fr).

iSolBuddy is the iPhone version of the SolBuddy tool developed by kiloWattSol. SolBuddy is a tough tool that can be used on the field. It adds to the functionalities of iSolBuddy, the detection of solar masks and the computation of their influence on the amount of irradiation on the panel.
