Isabel is a validated medical app that enables you to search for diagnoses by multiple signs and symptoms. It provides iPhone access to the “professional grade” Isabel system covering all ages and over 6,000 diseases that is used by health systems and doctors around the world.
**THIS APP PROVIDES ACCESS TO AN EXISTING ONLINE SYSTEM. IT IS FREE TO DOWNLOAD BUT YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR A WEEKLY, MONTHLY OR ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION AS AN IN-APP PURCHASE. YOU WILL BE ASKED TO REGISTER TO ACCESS THE SYSTEM AND WILL BE ABLE TO SELECT THE SUBSCRIPTION PERIOD AT THAT POINT. **

A good example would be a patient in ED with hand edema and hypotension who you are treating for sepsis and is not responding. The Isabel system might remind you to also consider anaphylaxis among other suggestions.
o The list of suggestions Isabel provides is not a differential diagnosis for your patient but rather a short list of possibilities from which you may build your differential or use as a trigger to obtain further information from your patient to assist in your differential workup.
HISTORY AND BACKGROUND
Isabel Healthcare (the app developer) was started back in 1999 after the founder’s daughter, Isabel, was badly misdiagnosed and had to spend 3 weeks in intensive care. She just survived and, today, is a healthy teenager. This experience was the inspiration behind the development of the Isabel tool that was designed to help doctors with diagnostic doubt by providing them with a list of likely diseases for a given set of signs and symptoms.
The project was started as a charity and today the founding charity remains a significant shareholder in Isabel Healthcare, the company that has developed the Isabel system.
