The iBlueButton® Veterans iPhone App was created by a physician-Veteran team for use by Veterans. It is based on the multiple award winning iBlueButton technology (U.S Department of Health and Human Services: First Prize winner in the Blue Button Mash Up Challenge October 2012, Investing in Innovation Challenge Awardee December, 2011). The Federal Government Blue Button® Initiative provides you with the ability to download and easily review your online personal health records from Blue Button enabled patient portals including My HealtheVet (MHV). Blue Button records are a rich source of important and often otherwise unavailable health information about you and may include a current list of medications, allergies, medical conditions, lab results, and emergency contact information.

Under your own control, the app provides automated, secure download and exchange of Blue Button records anytime, anywhere. With the app, you can “Push” in real time these records (along with other records) to a doctor’s iPad running the iBlueButton® Professional App who will be able to send you back other important health information for you to keep and share with other health care providers. 


When using the iBlueButton Veterans App for the first time, enter the app then enter your username and password for each portal. If you have received care at a VA medical facility and have created a MHV account, complete the In-Person Authentication process to upgrade your MHV account so that your record will include medications, appointments and lab results.

► Automated Blue Button Record Download. Automatically and securely access and download Blue Button records from the following portals: My HealtheVet, MyMedicare.gov, and TRICARE online, Aetna and RelayHealth.

►Share Health Records with your Doctor. Easily and securely “Push” your Blue Button and other records directly to your doctor’s iPad at the time of you are being seen. Also receive back health records transferred by your doctor including visit summaries, X-ray images and reports, laboratory results, and patient instructions.

► Access Other Apps, Transfer Files and Images. Scan paper records using the built-in camera function, or import photos into the app from your camera roll. Multiple file types can be imported from mail attachments and can be exchanged with other iOS apps, including: Adobe PDF; JPG, JPEG, PNG; Word; Powerpoint PPT and PPTX; Pages, Numbers, Keynote files.

► Record Exchange Log. The app automatically keeps a log of any records which you exchanged with your doctor and records a detailed profile of each doctor with whom you shared records.

► Email Records to Health Care Providers. You can choose to email selected documents using the integrated mail feature.

► Print Any Record Exchanged and Stored Within the App.

► Built-In Portal Specific Resources, Calendar and Check-List. Access directly a portal-specific list of health care online resources. Use the App’s discharge checklist to help you plan a healthy return home after a hospital stay.

► State of the Art Security Features. iBlueButton is password protected and securely stores your data. The record transfer or “Push” employs a highly secure protocol. There is also a built-in lock-out feature, prompting you to re-enter your password after 5 minutes of inactivity (or anytime you reopen the app).

► The iBlueButton Veterans app can be downloaded at no charge, and the first download of any Blue Button record is free. Subsequent Medicare, Aetna, RelayHealth, and TRICARE Blue Button record downloads are priced as follows: 5 downloads - $1.99; 25 downloads - $7.99
