The Triglav National Park (TNP), the only Slovenian national park, is named after Triglav, the highest mountain of Slovenia (2864 m). It extends along the Italian border and close to the Austrian border in the north-west part of Slovenia. The park covers 880 square Km, 4 % of the territory of Slovenia. The Park is proud of its pure waters, deep-cut gorges, remains of virgin forests, richness of biodiversity, being an Eldorado of mountain flowers, including several endemic plants.
This interactive guide allows the identification of native trees, shrubs and woody climbers of the Triglav National Park area. The guide includes 159 taxa, the majority of native woody species, plus some alien but already naturalised species like Robinia pseudacacia and Ailanthus altissima. For difficult genera like Rubus, Rosa and Salix only the most common species are treated.
The key is designed to help citizens to learn about the nature in the nature, and is intended as an educational tool for teachers and students for teaching biology and science. It was created by the interreg Project SiiT (School-oriented Interactive Identification Tools: exploring biodiversity in a cross-border area), in collaboration between the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Trieste (Italy) and the Triglav National Park (Slovenia).
In the annotated Slovenian version, species descriptions are derived from Mala Flora Slovenije (Martinčič et al., 2007), Flora Helvetica (Lauber & Wagner, 1998) and Drevesne vrste na Slovenskem (Brus, 2004); vulnerability and protection status are after the Red List of threatened species in Slovenia (Ur. l. RS 82/2002) and the Decree on protected wild plant species (Ur. l. RS 46/2004).
