Application Description
FreshCalc is a special calculator designed to help you calculate a selling price for perishables to cover spoilage losses and your profit markup at the same time. We even included a special discount tool to help you clear inventory quickly.
Who is this App for?
Anyone buying, pricing or selling perishables such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, seafood, meat, film, canned goods, desserts, bakery articles, deli produce, frozen items, dairy goods and pharmaceutical products.
If you handle perishables, then you frequently need to calculate:
- Gross Margin
- Markup based on Spoilage Rate
- Discounts and Markdowns
- % Total
- % Change
and this is exactly what this little App does for you.
You can't go wrong with this simple tool.
Anyone can use it - it's really that simple.
All you need is an iPhone.
By inputting two of the three variables (Cost, % Margin or Price), the Margins tool will solve for the unknown automatically. If you input a Spoilage Rate as well, FreshCalc can deliver your Effective Sales Price in one step.
Most people in sales and purchasing rely on their favorite spreadsheets when they want to calculate margins or a price discount. Some folks have memorized the formulas and use a calculator for the task.
We thought it might be interesting to put these special formulas into an iPhone application so that you could get the right answer on demand and right in the palm of your hand without remembering any equations or formulas.
FreshCalc will deliver your answer in under a second, all you need to do is input numerical values into 2 of the 3 topmost fields. To clear the fields, just shake the iPhone.

* This App assumes some portion of the product will spoil and become unsellable
* FreshCalc allows you to apply a second round of markup to add the cost of the unsellable product evenly to the balance of the sellable product
Example:
If a 20 pound box of bananas yields 2 pounds of spoilage (10% spoilage) then your selling price for 18 pounds must be marked up to cover the cost of the spoiled 2 pounds. So if the 20 pound box costs you $8 and you need a margin of 50%, your Initial Price w/o Spoilage would be $16. Since the Spoilage Rate is 10% your Selling Price would be $17.78.
