FReader allows you to take a picture of a digital code (datamatrix, QR code) on a physical object, and link it to a proprietary database to access additional tracking information, such as date or production, serial number, lot number, market location. Contrary to most free similar applications, the decoding is not performed on the iPhone itself, but the image is sent to a server and decoded by a very powerful algorithm.
Example:
You are a patient with a serious disease, using an expensive drug, and you want to make sure that what you have in hand is genuine and has not been tampered with. You scan the code, and the drug company server will tell you everything about this particular box: where it was produced, when it left the production plant, ...
You are a bar manager and you want to ensure the alcool is genuine ...
You are a wine collector and you want to check how and when to drink the expensive bottle you bought a few years ago.
You are an official inspector in a city and you suspect the product you have in hand is a fake; you scan the code, and the iPhone will tell you every confidential information about this particular product, according to your credential. You may discover that this particular code is not valid for this product, or that this product is supposed to be sold in India, or that it was already scanned in another city miles away just a few minutes ago.

The server will keep the image, the user ID and the GPS location.
The decoding require an internet connection (WiFi or 3G) and the GPS location.
This is a great tool for marketing and anti-counterfeit.
