Evidence based medicine related knowledge and skills will be taught in an online journal club format that will feature eight published articles per academic year (October – May). Participants will be asked to critically appraise the latest clinical research studies in a structured format. Each session will begin with a clinical scenario that raises a specific clinical question, for example whether a patient with locally advanced prostate cancer should receive adjuvant radiation following radical prostatectomy. This provides the back-drop for a critical review of a recent clinical research study which provides some of the current best evidence on that topic. This study is then reviewed and discussed addressing three key questions: 1) are the results likely to be valid, 2) what are the study results, and 3) should the study findings be applied to the care of the specific patient described in the clinical scenario. To facilitate this exercise, evidence based medicine review articles such as those from the Users' Guide to the Urological Literature series published in the Journal of Urology will be provided as a guide.
