Africa is the world's second-largest and second most-populous continent. It covers 6% of the Earth's total surface area and 20.4% of the total land area. With a billion people in 61 territories, it accounts for about 14.72% of the world's human population.

Africa, particularly central eastern Africa, is widely regarded within the scientific community to be the origin of humans and the Hominidae clade (great apes), as evidenced by the discovery of the earliest hominids and their ancestors, as well as later ones that have been dated to around seven million years ago, with the earliest Homo sapiens (modern human) found in Ethiopia being dated to circa 200,000 years ago. This is truly our homeland!

Africa also boasts the world's largest combination of density of wild animal populations and diversity. Approximately 100,000 species of insectshave been discovered here, making up about 10-20% of the global insect species. Africa is the richest continent of freshwater fish, with about 3000 species. There are around 400 known species of invertebrates. There are more than 2600 bird species in Africa, and more than 1100 species of mammals (64 of those species are primates).
