Hear a melody in your head and you’re not sure how to translate that to an instrument? Or does your trial-and-error method of picking out the notes distract you from the original melody you heard? Or, are you trying to figure out what the melodic harmonies are for a tune you’re trying to learn to play by ear, but there are too many other things going on in the song to pick out the notes? Ear Sharpener can help.

♪ Relative pitch is the ability to recognize any note, given the reference point of any other note.

♪ Ear Sharpener is both for beginning ears and seasoned ears. Even if you already have excellent relative pitch, Ear Sharpener will further develop your ear with its more advanced settings by training you to recognize multiple notes simultaneously – not chords, but combinations of completely random notes. Like weight training for your ears.

Ear Sharpener is a simple tool you can use to master relative pitch. It’s better than interval training drills that have you guess whether you heard, for example, a perfect 4th or a major 3rd – rather than just interval training, Ear Sharpener is scale-degree training. That is to say, Ear Sharpener is interval training, but in the context of a tonal center. Ear Sharpener will indirectly help you to improve your recognition of intervals, as it trains you to recognize the twelve scale degrees.

Once you press “Play”, you have a minute and a half to complete as many rounds as you can. At the beginning of each round, Ear Sharpener establishes a tonal center by playing a cadence in the key that you specified, and then it plays the number of notes that you specified (up to 6) – it chooses these notes at random. You then have to indicate what notes were played after the cadence. If you want help, there are three “hints” you can use (each of which lower your score for that round):

• You can listen to any of the possible notes by holding down its button for one second
• You can repeat the cadence
• You can repeat the notes

Another thing you can do to help figure out what you’re hearing, which doesn’t lower your score, is to hum to yourself the tonal center and/or the note(s) that you’re trying to figure out.

Ear Sharpener has a scoring system and keeps track of your high score, to encourage you to keep improving. The maximum score you can get per round depends on the difficulty of the settings. The more rounds you complete before the timer runs out, the higher your score.

Ear Sharpener has two beginner modes, which test you on three or seven scale degrees, instead of all twelve. The beginner modes keep you in the key of C, and limit you to single notes.

Ear Sharpener includes a beginner-mode demo, which shows you a simulation of one set of rounds.
