Before he passed away in 2001, Fred Lasswell was the artist and writer of one of the world’s most popular comic strips — the classic “Barney Google and Snuffy Smith,” for more than 60 years.

Uncle Fred received many honors throughout his career, including: the Banshees Award of the Silver Lady in 1962; the Best Humor Strip and the Reuben Award from the National Cartoonists Society in 1964 — the first time in the society’s history that an individual won both awards the same year; the Elzie Segar Award (a bronze Popeye statuette) for outstanding contributions to the art of cartooning in 1984 and again in 1994, celebrating the 75th anniversary of “Barney Google and Snuffy Smith.”
