but a high mix ratio requires you to leave room within the mixture for
the concentrate, how do you re-interpret instructions correctly?

Imagine having to top up a fuel container with 2.5 pints for a chainsaw
requiring a 1:30 mix of 2-stroke oil, but your measuring container has the
fluid ounce gradations faded beyond practical use, with only the metric scale showing.
You could guess your way, but make too rich a mix and the boss will
notice from the blue smoke you're wasting her money.
