CrowdWise is an experiment in using aggregated information ('The Wisdom of Crowds') to predict sports results.

The Wisdom of Crowds is a theory based on the idea that large groups of diverse, independently opinionated people are collectively smarter than an elite few.

In 1906 renowned statistician and psychologist Francis Galton encountered a county fair stall inviting punters to guess the weight of an ox. Hundreds of people had a guess, but nobody got it exactly right. When the competition was over Galton used the records of the punters' attempts to calculate an average. While no single person had correctly guessed the ox's weight, the average of everybody's guesses was correct to within 1lb. The collective had proved to be 'smarter' than any one individual in the competition.

CrowdWise is an attempt to apply the same theory to sports results. The app lets you predict results, and your predictions are factored into the collective (average) prediction. Should the theory hold up, the collective prediction should prove close to the actual outcome.

Use CrowdWise when you're filling in your betting slip, just don't blame me if you lose! :)

- To protect the integrity of the data, you can't view the collective prediction until you've submitted your own prediction.
