What is the DKMS Database?

The “DKMS” Database searches for and identifies potential stem cell donors for people who have a blood cancer or other disease, in the area of hematology. With over 3.6 million people already registered, the organization has the world’s biggest database for such potential donors. This has enabled more than 35,000 stem cell transplantations to take place to date, since the organization started.

DKMS was founded in Germany around the tragic case of Mechtild Harf, who in 1991 was in dire need of a stem cell transplantation. Mechtild’s husband Peter Harf, and her doctor Professor Gerhard Ehninger, started a private initiative in an effort to find a matching donor. It was from these modest beginnings that on 28 May 1991 DKMS officially became a national charity. With the aim of saving more lives through concerted efforts, DKMS quickly grew and has also developed successfully internationally.
DKMS currently registers stem cell donors in the USA, (Delete Blood Cancer – DKMS Americas), Poland (DKMS Polska), Spain (Fundación DKMS España) and in Great Britain (Delete Blood Cancer UK).

Monetary donations are essential in building up the database, as the cost of registering each new potential donor is 50 Euros.

Together we are beating blood cancer – please take this opportunity to join us in our fight!
