"Can't Say This" is a simple Taboo-like game that I wrote for use in my classroom. I've taught English in China for the last five years.

I find that the process of finding an atypical means to get your idea across helpful for the students. They can't short-cut the process by falling back on Chinese or throwing out the usual English synonym. It also helps them think in English.

The game comes with 1000 built-in cards. But you can easily add your own cards. You can add new cards manually in the app or bulk load the cards using a text file.

How I usually play the game in the class is to first divide the class into two teams. For each turn, one person from each team comes up to the front. Each turn has two rounds. One of the players goes first while the other player, the referee, watches closely for mistakes made by the first player. If the player uses non-English words or tries to communicate by body language or uses a taboo word, the referee calls out "No!" and the card is passed. At the end of the round, the player has a score. The score is determined by doubling the number of cards the player's team "got" minus the number of cards the player had to pass on.

Next, the players switch roles. The player becomes the referee and the referee becomes the player. The new player has the time limit to score better than the first player. If he does, then his team gets his score. If he doesn't, the other team gets their score. On a tie, neither team gets points.

Don't worry if you don't like the scoring method. In your own classroom, since you'll be writing the scores on the blackboard, you can do it however you like.
