Smart guides for smart phones for wise pilgrims!
Designed, written, and developed with pilgrims in mind (and by a pilgrim himself), the smart guides published by Wise Pilgrim are the most up to date guide available. It receives updates regularly (from within the app) and pilgrims can contribute their own observations of unexpected changes along the way.
The Camino de Invierno, or Winter Route, is steadily becoming a viable alternative to pilgrims wishing for something just a little bit different. It begins in Ponferrada on the Camino Francés but follows a more Southern approach to Santiago. In so doing the Camino de Invierno bypasses the snowier mountain passes in favor of a warmer climate. These days it is actually more popular during the summer, as accommodation along the way has yet to fully mature.
As a way to Santiago it is an excellent option for pilgrims looking to escape from the camino itself. The stages are long, accommodation is more frequently in hostals, pensions, or polideportivos, and the number of pilgrims are dramatically fewer. Before arriving in Santiago it merges with the Camino Sanabrés for the last 2 days of walking. This guide includes the camino all the way to Santiago.
If you are familiar with the other Wise Pilgrim guides, this one offers a few differences:
1. The distance to Santiago is indicated for every town. This is possible because there are no alternatives to where you can walk.
2. Elevation gains and losses are indicated for every stage.
This app will grow as the Invierno itself matures. More albergues are under construction and will automatically be updated when they do.
FEATURES:
Note: The data in the guide works offline, but things like mapping and comments (and for the moment photos), only work with a data connection. Photo bundles are coming soon so that you can get all of the data in one download and save the roaming charges.
Albergue Directory. A full directory of Albergues, and notes on which towns have alternative accommodation like camping, hotels, pensions, and casas rurales.
Stage Guide. Full directory of villages along the way, in the order in which you pass them, with accurate listings of what services are available.
Location Aware. Every location is geo-located. Devices with GPS enabled will display actual distance from every point (albergue, church, city, etc.) within the app. Devices without GPS will instead show measured distances between points.
Photos. Photos of albergues, monuments and other points of interest along the way are currently viewable while online from within the app.
Maps. If you have a data connection, or are connected to wifi, you can view the locations of every point on a map. Unfortunately, this feature is unavailable without a connection.
Scrollable Elevation Map. This one is hard to show with just a screenshot, but the elevation that appears at the top of every city page scrolls South to North. One complete elevation, from Ponferrada to Santiago, uninterrupted by page folds.
Comments. Albergue closed early for the season? Have a restaurant that you want to share, or perhaps one to warn others about? Every location in the app gives you the opportunity to leave a comment and to read the comments left by others. No registration necessary.
INSTANT UPDATES:
This is the only guide that is always up to date. Whether you plan to walk next week, or next year, up to date information can be re-downloaded and stored from within the app. This applies for the photos as well, most of which will be added this summer.
