Application Description

Bit.ly Tools is an easy-to-use utility that lets you create short URLs with your iPhone using the bit.ly or j.mp service, and then copy these links to the clipboard so you can use them in other iPhone applications. Once you’ve created your short link and pressed the button to put it on the clipboard, you can launch another application, click anywhere you can enter text and select Paste—it’s that simple.
Additionally you can track the click statistics for URLs you create directly in the application. There is also a URL lookup tool, so you can enter in a bit.ly or j.mp link and see who created it and what the long site URL is that it points to.
You can also enter your bit.ly user name and developer key so that links you create on your device show up on the bit.ly site when you log in!
AutoShorten feature: If you go into the Settings screen and turn this on, the Bit.ly Tools application will look on the clipboard when it launches, and if it finds a valid URL already on the clipboard, it will automatically shorten it and place it on the clipboard at the same time so it is immediately ready for use.
** USE OF BIT.LY DEVELOPER (API) KEYS **
To find out what your API KEY is for your Bit.ly account (again, these are not the same thing), go to this URL:
http://bit.ly/account -- You need to be signed in to see your API key.
After you sign in and go to the URL above, your Bit.ly API Key is displayed, and that plus your Bit.ly User Name (not your password) is what you need to enter into the Bit.ly Tools application.

** NOTE ON URL TRACKING **
Currently the bit.ly service doesn’t enable third-parties to determine the links you’ve created on their site and pull in tracking data. Therefore you can only track links in the application that were created with the application.
Bit.ly is working on providing a way to provide this data and when it is available we will update the application to show all of your link tracking statistics, whether they were created online, or on your device.
