About Benalmádena:
Benalmádena is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. The municipality is situated approximately 12 km to the west of the city of Málaga, on the southern coast between Torremolinos and Fuengirola. It forms part of the metropolitan area of Málaga and resides in the comarca of the Costa del Sol Occidental. Benalmádena is also home to the Enlightening Stupa, the largest stupa (a structure important in Buddhism) in the Western world, standing 33 meters tall.
Benalmádena covers an area of 27 km2 that extends from the summits of the Sierra de Mijas to the sea, falling in some places as a cliff. The territory is crossed from east to west on Autovia A-7, which connects with Malaga and other centers of the Mediterranean coast.
With 61,383 inhabitants according to the INE census of 2010, Benalmádena is the eighth most populous municipality in the province and the third largest metropolitan area, behind Málaga and Torremolinos. Benalmádena’s population is concentrated in three main centers: Benalmadena Pueblo (the old town), Arroyo de la Miel and Benalmádena Costa, although the high urban growth and demographic tends to unify the three cores.
Benalmádena is one of the main tourist destinations on the Costa del Sol, notable for its leisure facilities, including the amusement park Tivoli World, 2 aquariums (Selwo Marina, See Life aquarium) , a casino (Casino/Hotel Torrequebrada), a cable car, one of the largest marinas of Andalusia (Puerto Marina), an indoor ice-skating ring, and the Enlightening Stupa.
The climate is typically Mediterranean, with mild temperatures throughout the year, absence of frost in the cold months and an average of 19°C. Its privileged climate and location in the southern coastal Europe are important factors so that the tourism industry is the main economic sector of the municipality.
