Each level in Beetle Trap begins with 15 Beetles on the Game Board and has a different Challenge to be accomplished. The objective of the game is to reduce the number of Beetles on the board to the number required to complete the challenge for the level. For example, the first level requires you to end up with three Beetles on the board and these can be on any positions on the board. Higher levels require you to also ensure that you end up with Beetles on particular positions on the board.

There are two types of game moves. The first type of move is only possible at the beginning of a level when all 15 Beetles are on the board. You play this move by tapping twice on any Beetle to remove the Beetle from the board and make an empty space. Once there is an empty space on the board, you can only play the second type of move which is played by panning (moving with your finger) a Beetle which is separated from an empty space by exactly one Beetle in-between, into the empty space. As you play this move, you will be moving the Beetle over exactly one another Beetle which will be removed from the board once your Beetle occupies the empty space. You will be able to pan only those Beetles which can move to an empty space.

For an empty space, there could be more than one Beetle that can move into it and you will need to choose one of them to occupy the empty space as per your strategy. You continue in this manner until various Beetles are removed from the board and you either end up with the objective described in the Challenge for the level, leading to a win, or to a Game Board state where no further moves are possible, leading to a losing play. More than one solution is possible for a winning play for each level. The game looks deceptively simple but will engage your thinking and memory in finding the winning sequence of moves.

Once you have mastered a level, you can try the Time Challenge mode where you have to complete your moves within two minutes and reach a winning position.

For every win a certain number of different Beetles are added to your Beetle collection. You can view your Beetle collection and compare your collection with your friends. Higher levels are more difficult but award more Beetles for a winning play. The game tracks your scores, completion times and achievements. The game then uses Apple's Game Center to provide a Leader Board so you can compare your scores with other players from around the world and your friends, track your achievements and challenge friends to beat your scores or achievements.
