The Beale Decoder is a tool for decoding the Beale ciphers. These ciphers were created in 1822 and have defied efforts to crack them, except for one, which was cracked in the 1860s. One of the ciphers allegedly describes the location of a fabulous treasure buried somewhere in Bedford County, Virginia. The cipher is a type of book cipher, so anyone who can come up with the correct keytext and numbering scheme can solve it. As one cryptologist put it, "A child could do it."

The decoder provides an efficient way of scanning potential keytexts while applying a variety of numbering schemes. All you supply is your imagination and any keytexts you wish to test.
