Built atop the architecture of Apple Maps while benefiting from their interactivity, “Amerigo” deploys concise but highly informative documentary clips (docu-clips) at points of inflexion between the mapping layers and specific points of user interest, such as national parks, scenic areas or the most visited cities in the United States. The sites are identified by color-coded “Play Button” icons - green for national parks and scenic areas, blue for bodies of water, violet for cities. There are three button sizes, the largest denoting (relatively speaking) major sites, such as The Grand Canyon or Las Vegas, with the smallest standing for lesser known sites, say Zion National Park or Lake Powell. Upon the initial app download, the icons are encircled by a grey ring. While the docu-clips download to the device, the rings change color clock-wise to indicate the progression - a full, same color circle means complete download. A streaming-while-downloading capability was built into the app. This version of “Amerigo” features English audio. Dedicated versions in Spanish, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, and Korean are already edited and being prepared for submission. The Home Screen, as well as the Rolling Credits Screen were designed for both right-handed, as well as left-handed users. We kept the screen designs extremely simple to avoid detracting from the app’s interactivity through Apple Maps while focusing on the docu-clips’ abundance of visual and aural information.
