On December 18, 1971, Congress passed the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Ac. In exchange for millions of acres of Alaska’s natural resource rich land, this Act created 13 Alaska Native regional corporations and more than 200 village corporations. Afognak is the village corporation for the original indigenous people who inhabited Afognak Island and lived in the village of Afognak.
