Melanie's sons begged her to tell them a story during a car ride without the usual stack of books handy. Just then, a bird flew past, and she wondered if it was looking for food - and what kind. More teasing for a story followed, which triggered her making up the tale for her sons. They requested it be retold many times thereafter; the nieces and nephews she shared it with enjoyed it as well. Thus, it became a natural choice for her first venture into children's literature.


Many of the pages have an optional “Paint Me” feature for children to finger paint the pages and create their own custom version of the book.
