Nursing home abuse and neglect are rampant. Too many horror stories involve what occurs to the elderly when they are not properly cared for within a facility. It has never been more important (especially with Alzheimer's on the rise) to observe and record events related to the care of your loved one. So many of the elderly do not have the memory or mental capacity to advocate for themselves. Like children, they are helpless and defenseless.

Once you have recorded your "encounters," you can e-mail the reports for personal or legal reasons. This tool can be used to try and improve the situation for your loved one. Sharing the log of unacceptable observances with the management team of the Nursing Home may help to rectify the situation as they see you as someone who pays attention and DOCUMENTS what is observed at the facility. If communication doesn't result in improved/acceptable care, your documentation can be useful within the context of a legal consultation, and/or to report elder abuse to appropriate state/federal agencies.
